Knowing When It’s Time to Enroll in Memory Care

Recent studies of seniors over the age of 65 reveal that nearly 10% of senior adults are living with dementia, with another 22% living with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). There are some differences between dementia and mild cognitive impairment. MCI is generally a precursor to dementia and can cause minor problems with memory retention, language, and judgment. Seniors who experience MCI describe it as having a “senior moment” or memory slip.

Dementia is a decremental decline in cognitive functions and can make simple tasks seem impossible or completely foreign. If you think your parent’s cognitive abilities are declining and are unsure if they need to enroll in a memory care program, here are some early warning signs of senior memory disorders:

  • Forgetting to take necessary medication on time or missing refill dates
  • Familiar tasks take longer to complete
  • They struggle with making decisions or solving minor and complex problems
  • They frequently become confused with where they are or the time of day, month, or year
  • Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
  • They mix up words without realizing it
  • Increasingly poor judgement
  • Sudden changes in their mood and personality

Ventana is a full-service luxury senior living community that offers comprehensive memory care programs for seniors with mild to severe dementia or other neurological disorders. Each program is tailored to the person and their unique symptoms. It can include occupational and speech therapy, assistance with daily living activities, and other necessary services.

Common Senior Memory Disorders

Here are the common senior memory disorders that are treatable through a senior memory care program:

Vascular Dementia

This type of dementia is characterized by vascular constriction that decreases blood flow to the brain. The cause of this disorder is typically a stroke or a significant head injury.

Dementia with Lewy Bodies

Lewy body is a type of abnormal protein deposit in the brain. It shrinks the portion of the brain that holds our memories. Actor Bruce Willis’ family announced he’s suffering from this type of dementia.

Frontotemporal Dementia

This is one of the more common types of dementia and affects the frontal and temporal cortex. It shrinks nerve cells in the brain and can cause aphasia, which affects a person’s ability to speak clearly.

Alzheimer’s Disease

This is one of the most well-known types of dementia. It’s characterized by the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. In turn, this can decrease the effectiveness of the brain communicating with the body.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s is a type of dementia that affects physical movements. Symptoms include shaking, stiffness, and balance and coordination difficulties. The cause of this disorder is from nerve cell degeneration in the part of the brain known as substantia nigra.

Encephalopathy

This disorder is caused by inflammation in the brain that causes major neurological changes that alter the brain’s function. It is caused by chronic liver conditions, an overdose of prescription medication, bleeding in the digestive tract, or repeated blows to the head.
