Meet Rekha Mehendale: A Dallas Home Base for a Life That Spans Continents

A Life That Has Always Spanned Two Countries

Rekha Mehendale was 21 when she left India for the United States in 1968.

Her husband was studying at a university here, and what began as a move across the world became a life in America. Nearly six decades later, India is still very much a part of that life.

Every January, Rekha returns for an extended visit, typically spending two months there.

Before leaving Dallas, she completes an out-of-town form, locks the door to her residence at Ventana, and goes. She says Ventana’s transportation service makes the beginning and end of the trip particularly easy, including airport drop-off and pickup.

For Rekha, it is one of the practical benefits of independent living.

Choosing a Home for the Life You Actually Live

Rekha says apartment size depends on individual needs. Her one-bedroom residence with a study and one-and-a-half baths works well for the way she lives, with floor-to-ceiling windows bringing natural light into the space.

Rekha’s own approach is practical: apartment size depends on individual needs. A large home may have made perfect sense during another season of life, with children at home, holidays with a houseful of guests, a home office, formal entertaining, and decades of things accumulated along the way. The next home does not have to recreate the last one to be a good one.

When Being Close Became More Important Than Ever

Another part of Rekha’s story is one she shares candidly.

Her husband suffered a serious stroke in 2006. While they were still living in their single-family home, Rekha says managing his care was stressful. Even with a private caregiver, finding dependable help was difficult.

Their move to Ventana changed the logistics of everyday life.

Her husband received skilled nursing care in the North Tower while Rekha continued living independently nearby. She could visit him easily and bring him upstairs to her residence for dinner.

They lived at different levels of care, but they still regularly spent time together.

Rekha describes that experience with deep gratitude. For couples researching senior living, her story also illustrates the value of having different levels of care available within the same community.

Ventana offers a continuum that includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, long-term skilled nursing care, rehabilitation, and respite care.

Finding Community on Her Own Terms

After losing her spouse, Rekha found herself surrounded by people she had come to know at Ventana. She describes the community as warm and close-knit, with Members supporting one another through good times and difficult ones.

Rekha’s Advice? Don’t Wait for Life to Make the Decision for You

When asked what she would tell someone considering Ventana, Rekha comes back to timing. Her advice is to make the move while you are still healthy enough to participate, meet people, and become part of the community.
